Metformin's Debilitating Side Effects

My sister stopped taking metformin as she could not tolerate its side effects. She complained from severe nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Anyone knows some tricks to overcome this problem?

She currently is on Temodar, Keppra, Vitamin D3, Curcumin, and Memantine.

Thank you.

  1. Same exact problem with my wife. She was better off it than on it. Best fix was stopping it.

  2. both my husband and his sister have experienced problems. My husband can tolerate it now but it took a while, building up the dose slowly seems to help and definitely taking with a meal.

  3. Metformin is pretty notorious for causing nausea, cramping, and diarrhea. I take it myself for diabetes. Usually, starting at a low dose and gradually working up does the trick. I've noticed some fatigue when I resume taking it after a break, but that resolves in about 72 hours for me with continued use. People do vary a lot in how well they tolerate metformin. I think it's worth trying a "start low, go slow" approach, but if a person just can't tolerate it, then there's no point being miserable.

Steve - you are right about the miserable part.

  5. Agree w/ SteveMDFP and try changing the generic brand formulation to see if that helps.
