Question for Hydroxychloroquine sulfate

Stephen:

It is hard for us to buy chloroquine phosphate to treat my mother's GBM. Can we use hydroxychloroquine sulfate to replace it?

Some forums say both these two medicines can be used to treat GBM, but Ben William's book says hydroxychloroquine sulfate can't be used to treat GBM. We are not sure who is right.

  1. The Mexican trials that seemed to show a survival improvement when added to standard treatments of the time (radiation and BCNU) for GBM all used chloroquine. Later, a North American trial added hydroxychloroquine to standard treatments for GBM (radiation and temozolomide), with no great improvement in survival over historical controls.

This doesn't mean it can't be used to treat GBM. There was a very interesting case series recently published combining hydroxychloroquine with rapamycin (sirolimus) for GBM, with impressive outcomes in three patients.

There is more evidence for chloroquine as a GBM treatment, but hydroxychloroquine may be better than nothing, especially in a combination with rapamycin.

  2. James,

We were having trouble sourcing Chloroquine in the US through the major pharmacies/insurance. We purchase it from an online Canadian pharmacy called Planet Drugs Direct. I order a 3 month supply each time for right around 30 dollars. It's extremely affordable. After I place the order, I have our NO fax the prescription to them, and we get the pills about 2 weeks later because they are sent from overseas. If I can provide anymore help, please let me know!
