Has anyone been put on antibiotics prophetically along with TMZ? I am not referring to Minocycline or similar antibiotic used off label, but rather as prophylaxis against infection. If so, what dosing schedule are you on?
Our oncologist prescribed Bactrim DS (Sulfamethoxazole 800mg / trimethoprim 160mg) prophylactically 2 tablets bid Monday and Thursdays. However we only used them if his white cells started to drop below normal. In 18 months probably only used them half a dozen times.
Dad was given the same thing by the first oncologist we saw (not Neuro specific). Sulfamethoxazole 160mg, 1 x daily. I looked it up and it says it's for pneumonia (PCP). We haven't started it yet but probably will once we start the TMZ.
No problems with infections or decreased WBC count. His oncologist wanted him on prophylactic antibiotics while on TMZ. I was unaware of anyone else on antibiotics for this reason. My question is one made out of curiosity just to see what others are doing.

DeleteNever used anything Mike, just doxycycline. Did your son have any infections during TMZ treatment?
