Honokiol

Hi All,

Anyone here on Honokiol can advise me if it is Ok to take it along with DCA and Avastin as well as immunotherapy PD-1? Have you had success with it?

How much dose should we start with? Should be taken all the time or during chemo days ?

Thanks
Noha

  1. Hi Noha. Chance is taking it to optimize Avastin, but he is not taking DCA. Hope this helps.

    1. Jude, may I ask how much honokiol Chance is taking. My husband just switched from TMZ to Avastin and CCNU. I'm not familiar with the new treatment drugs and have to revise the list of supplements. I asked the doctor at MSKCC about the PD-1, but there weren't any spots. My husband's tumor was about 9 ounces in volume a month ago, so I'm very discouraged and need to find things that can help the Avastin and CCNU. By the way I'm daninha but can't seem to be able to log on from work, so I'm posting under anonymous. I appreciate any input. Thank you!

    2. Daninha,
There might be other sites in NY with different PD-1/PD-L1 targeted trials. Have you looked into viral therapy options?

  2. Thanks Jude. Thanks u so much . How much is he taking? Have u seen positive or encouraging result?

Daninha, MSKCC should be able to get you either keytruda or nivolumab (PD-1) on compassionate use along with Avastin and CCNU. If you want to email me, I can put you in touch with a couple of NY doctors who will be able to get that done for you. It didn't work long enough for us but it did for others. Will be happy to assist.

    1. Hi, Noha - would you please email me with any NY doctors that would be willing to help with a cocktail therapy? I am at logan607 at hotmail. Thank you!

    2. Hi Logan, sorry, I just saw this. Sure. Are you or a loved one being treated in New York? Thanks

  3. Hi Noha, No, we haven't noted a difference but there's no doubt why. We didn't just add Honokoil, we also added DCA (which he didn't take long), and changed from a THC/CBD 2:1 to CBD only. There is no way to know what is working, or if ANYTHING is working... He takes Honopure from Econeugenics, 2g divided in 2 doses with food.

  4. Thanks Jude. Can I ask you Why did you change to CBD only? My husband just started a baby dose of 1:1 and it is knocking him out.

  5. Stephen's idea was that CBD would optimize Avastin and Chance never liked the effects of the psychoactive THC anyway, so he switched to CBD only.

  6. The evidence for CBD + Avastin comes from this abstract published at SNO 2015.

" RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that CBD treatment down-regulates HIF 1 alpha under hypoxic conditions in vitro and in vivo. Combination treatment with CBD and bevacuzimab decreases tumor growth and intratumoral hypoxia in clinically relevant human GBM xenograft models. Targeting bevacuzimab induced hypoxia by inhibiting HIF 1 alpha might be a promising combinatorial treatment strategy for the treatment of GBM."

This is the reason I've suggested honokiol in combination with Avastin, as honokiol also suppressed HIF-1a in a mouse model of colon cancer (though there is no direct evidence for the combination of honokiol + Avastin).

  7. Thanks Stephen. There was another study with Temodar+ THC and CBD. I am attaching : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21220494/

If someone is taking Avastin + temodar, do you think the stronger synergy along with this combination would be CBD only or CBD and THC? Many thanks

  8. Also, Honokial supports cellular health and has a strong antioxidant effect. This gets me worried about its effect with chemo. Is this a valid concern I should be having? I know the issue of antioxidants along with chemo is very controversial with non conclusive universal agreement whether pro or against.. This is why I am interested in hearing the experience of those who tried it. Thanks

  9. Honokiol also sensitized multi-drug resistant tumors to paclitaxel chemotherapy in a mouse study.

  11. This is interesting. Chance is taking Honokoil, but I can't find reference to Magnolol anywhere on the Econugenics site. I did find a site that offers 90% honokiol and magnolol - https://www.nutristand.com/product/magnolia-30mg-extract/. Stephen, any thoughts on this.

    1. The Nutrisand product is 90 x 30 mg capsules (2.7 grams total) of 90% magnolol + honokiol for $19.95.

I also found this product, which is 50 grams, 95% honokiol + magnolol, for $30, which appears to be a far better deal.

The full PDF of the Oncotarget study can be downloaded here:

It does show co-operation between honokiol and magnolol in nude mice with human glioma tumors grown in the brain, one caveat is that the supplements were injected rather than given orally, but this is also the case in other honokiol studies for glioma.

    2. We are going to try the Liftmode product. I contacted the company on the best way to take it and here is their reply: "Magnolia Bark extract is best consumed by simply eating it and washing it down. We would recommend sublingual consumption, however this supplement tends to become numbing and peppery the longer it is held in the mouth and can be irritating to some."

  12. Our integrative doctor is suggesting I.V. for honokiol during chemo and radiation. Does anyone see any downside for that? thx
