Antioxidants and CBD - a warning (?)

Hi Everyone!
I don't post here frequently but I'm an active reader. First of all, thank you Stephen and all good people who share their stories and knowledge about battling GBM and other gliomas. The information gathered here is priceless!

A couple of days ago I came across some information that antioxidants appear to reverse the cancer-inhibiting properties of CBD what leads to a conculsion that extensive supplementation with AOX should be significantly reduced or stopped, e.g. curcumin, CoQ10 etc.
Has anyone got any more detailed info on that?

  1. I think the tendency to lump all antioxidants together is a barrier to understanding the complexity of the matter. Every "antioxidant" (I use the term in quotes because most antioxidants are far more than just antioxidants) is different, and they may have other mechanisms of action in cancer therapy that are more important than their antioxidant activity. Curcumin is a great example, as Dustin Sulak mentions in his response.

In this case, just because alpha-tocopherol interfered with the anti-cancer activity of CBD in vitro, we can't then extrapolate that every other agent with any sort of antioxidant activity would do the same.

I totally agree that some antioxidants should most likely be avoided in some situations, but saying all antioxidants should be avoided is a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, in my opinion. It seems the doctor that sounded the initial warning realizes this when he later wrote "My initial admonition to stop all anti-oxidants may have been an over reaction."

  2. We have just placed an order for Cannabis. We are taking capsules for Curcumin, CoQ10 and others. Is there any suggestion on which ones to drop in favor of Cannabis based on the comments above?

  3. Thank you for your replies. Stephen, that's a good conclusion what you wrote. Everything must be thought over very well, either to keep or avoid some AOX, every case is different.

  4. We have taken an antioxidant, pycnogenol, for years and strongly suspect that Husband had this GBM for about two years before diagnosis. No one could believe he was so highly functional with that golf-ball sized tumor and so much swelling. We credit the pycnogenol and as soon as radiation ended, we added it back to his medicine regimen. The worry about it interfering with the other things he is taking is our worry as well, but we'll see how it goes when we get the results of his next MRI on Aug. 31st.
